Club History
The Broadwater Bobcats were formed in 2008 to provide the opportunity for young people
living in the Guildford & Godalming areas to get the chance to learn about & play
the games of baseball & softball.
Guildford has had an adult team called the Mavericks, who have been playing in the British Baseball Federation leagues since 1990 but there had been no provision for youngsters. Working with the help of Mike Burdett, the Mavericks General Manager, we set about the formation of a junior club and in 2008 we started recruiting for members.
The club has grown in size since those early days & last season we were attracting a membership from a very wide age range of 7 through to 16, the problem we were facing was that we did not have enough youngsters in each age group to be able to train effectively or to form distinct age groups that could have meaningful practice sessions.
To this end, we have revised our approach to junior baseball & starting in 2011 we have developed a school programme of baseball training for youngsters in the School Year Groups 3 to 6.
Working closely with the UKYBA (www.ukyba.co.uk) we have started holding after-school baseball clubs aimed at youngsters aged 7 to 10 years old.
This provision is at least giving youngsters the opportunity to start learning about baseball in Primary & Junior school - so far we have been unable to get the project up & running in local Secondary schools & so there is no provision for those aged 11-16 to play baseball which is where the Bobcats come in!
