Hello! Welcome to the Broadwater Bobcats website…..

Our club was formed in Dec 2008 as a response to a growing demand from youngsters for the opportunity to play baseball & softball in the Guildford & Godalming areas.

Junior baseball was last played in Surrey in 1991, when the first junior section was started as part of the Guildford Mavericks senior baseball club.  The Mavericks were formed in 1989 & were an amalgamation of two clubs, an existing club called the Wokingham Millers & a brand new Guildford based club – the Mavericks. The two senior sides came together to form one club that still plays within the British Baseball Federation league today….more about them later on!

In 1991, the Junior side was started & drew a great deal of attention from parents & youngsters alike & it was very well attended. Unfortunately, a lack of resources both financial & practical, led to the junior club eventually disbanding after having played for just one season, which was a great shame as all of those who took part enjoyed their experience – in fact, one young man, Henry Collins, was so inspired by the sport that he eventually joined a club in Bracknell & now pitches for the UK squad in International tournaments….well done Henry!!

In 2008, the Mavericks had to move their home ground from Guildford, as the site which they were playing on was scheduled for redevelopment & it was at this time that Mike Burdett, their club Manager, approached me & asked if we could organise the formation of a junior team to help them with the enquiries they were getting from youngsters via their website…so that’s exactly what we did….

The first thing we had to do was find a new home & after many calls & emails, we were eventually invited by Nick Irwin of Broadwater High School to have a look at their facilities in Summers Road, Farncombe.  We loved it! The school has an extensive Sports block with gymnasiums, sports hall, changing rooms & various pitches, together with a sports & social club & Nick was so keen to attract baseball to the school as another sporting option for pupils & adults alike…After several meetings we eventually decided where to build our new diamond & work started on the new construction in March 2009….as I write this in April, we are just putting the finishing touches to our new ground & it will see its first competitive game on Sunday 19th April when we play hosts to the Richmond Dragons….if you want to see the results, visit www.guildfordmavericks.co.uk

Having now moved to Broadwater, we set about advertising for new junior players for the newly formed Broadwater Bobcats & we have set out two rough age groups for members; 6 to 10 years & 11 to 16 years, although these groupings are flexible depending upon the physical size of the youngsters involved. Everyone is invited! It doesn’t matter if you have never played before – you can come down to the club & have a go at one of the best sports in the world! We provide you with equipment & a structured coaching programme that you can develop to whatever level you wish…

If you are walking along Summers Road & you see us there, come on over & have a chat with us, or you might simply want to sit down & watch what we do – if you want to join us, click here to be taken to our membership pages, where you can download an application form & welcome pack.
