Slow Pitch Softball

2nd July 2011 BBQ event

Our annual Family Day was yet again favoured with lovely sunshine with the occasional shade from the clouds….proceedings kicked off at 1pm & we continued to play softball until 5.30 (although some diehards were still at it at 6!)

Our thanks go to all of you who came & supported the event & our special thanks go out to Sandra, Eddie & James, who worked so hard throughout the day transporting equipment, setting up gazebos & running the food stall……our celebrity griddle cook was a certain Mr Oliva…who seemed to be a natural at flipping burgers…..although we think his policy of  "one for you & two for me" will have a very negative effect on his waistband!

The highlight of the afternoon was definitely the Oliva commentary during the game…..& the skills shown by all of the kids who took part on the day…well done all of you!

Not everyone likes the speed & competition in baseball, so the favourite family sport in the US is slow pitch softball.  Softball is essentially the same game as baseball except it is played with larger, fatter bats & a much bigger ball (the size of a small grapefruit). The pitches to the batter are performed underarm & this gives the batter a much better chance of making contact with the ball. Most softball leagues also place limitations on base stealing & bunting….

Softball games are intended to be a purely social affair where all members of the family can take part from age 5 to 100!!

It’s not supposed to be taken too seriously at this level & most events are also turned into a family barbeque – we are planning to hold several of these games throughout 2011 & you should keep an eye on this website for the latest news & softball games – better still, get on our mailing list…….
